Part 3:

Instrument Pod Removal:

Tools required:

T-15 Torx wrench

small flat screwdriver (to pry electrical connections loose)

medium phillips screwdriver

1/4” drive socket wrench or possibly a hand-held cordless power tool

7 mm socket

10 mm socket

variety of extensions for the 1/4” socket wrench

Procedure:

Remove the faceplate that covers the gauges. This entails removing (4) T-15 Torx screws. Also remove the (4) torx screws for the headlight controls and the (4) Torx screws for the defrost/trunk release controls. Unplug both of these sets and put them aside.

There are (3) T-15 Torx screws on the top of the instrument cluster. There are also (2) Torx screws hidden on the back of the pod. (Reach over the cluster and downwards.) Remove all of these. Underneath the steering column, there are (4) 7 mm screws that fasten the lower cover to the bottom of the instrument pod. Once all of the covers are removed, you will find (2) 10 mm screws fastening the pod to the front firewall. Remove these bolts and unplug the wiring harnesses. The assembly should come free.

Dashboard Removal:

Tools required:

T-15 Torx wrench

medium phillips screwdriver

1/4” drive socket wrench or possibly a hand-held cordless power tool

7 mm socket

10 mm socket

variety of extensions for the 1/4” socket wrench

Procedure:

The Instrument Pod  and Center Console must be removed before you attempt to remove the dashboard. You may also want to remove the steering wheel to give yourself more space. To do this you will need to rent a steering wheel puller from an automotive store or a friend, unless you decide to make one yourself. The front speaker covers should be carefully removed using a flat blade screwdriver. They should pry straight up. This should reveal two speakers; each held on with (4) 7 mm screws and (2) 7 mm screws which fasten the dashboard to the firewall. To make things easier, the speakers should be removed and unplugged. Remove the 2 firewall screws from each side. Remove the (3) phillips screws that secure the hood release lever. (This is located on the driver’s side on the bottom of the dashboard) Removing this should reveal (1) 13 mm screw. The passenger side also has (1) 13 mm screw in the same place. Remove these, and carefully maneuver the dashboard out of the car.
