Fiero – The Comeback Kid?

According to several published articles in automobile related magazines (like Autoweek – December 14, 1998) Pontiac is considering selling a two seat, rear wheel drive, mid-engine placement sports coupe. This car is currently being tested in Germany off of an Opel (GM in Europe) platform. The test car is based off of the Opel Tigra with a stretched wheelbase (see photo).

This car would be powered by a variation of the four cylinder Gamma engine which is an all aluminum engine! Because the Pontiac version of this car would be based on a high volume Opel car, GM can justify the production of a lower volume, niche, Pontiac only version. Does this sound similar to all the articles we read back in the early 1980’s before the Fiero came out? Pontiac is probably not considering the name FIERO – but, what about Pegasus or Fiamma? We will have to wait and see…
